Chromium picolinate
Chromium Picolinate for Blood Sugar: What 0.7 mcg in Sugar Defender Can Do
Chromium picolinate for blood sugar has mixed, small evidence: trials used 200-1,000 mcg a day and found slight drops only in some people with diabetes. One 1 mL serving of Sugar Defender lists 0.7 mcg, 2% of the Daily Value. Reaching even the lowest studied dose would take about 286 mL, nearly five bottles, in a day.

The mineral01
What is chromium picolinate?
Chromium picolinate is the trace mineral chromium bound to picolinic acid, a common supplement form. It is the first line on the Sugar Defender panel.
The body needs only tiny amounts of chromium, counted in micrograms. It is thought to help insulin do its job.
It is also the only ingredient in the drops with a printed amount. Every other ingredient hides inside the 200 mg blend.
| Name on the label | Chromium (as Chromium Picolinate) |
|---|---|
| What it is | Trace mineral |
| Place on the label | Chromium line, above the blend |
| Amount per mL (1 dropper) | 0.7 mcg per mL (2% DV) |
| Amount used in research | 200-1,000 mcg a day |
| Strength of evidence | Mixed; small effect in some people with diabetes |
| Marketed or traditional use | Helps insulin do its job |
| Main caution | Can add to the effect of diabetes medicines. |
Daily Value02
What is the chromium Daily Value, and how close is one dropper?
The chromium Daily Value is 35 mcg, and one 1 mL serving gives 0.7 mcg, which is the 2% printed on the label (NIH ODS, Chromium).
The Daily Value is a single label number. Actual needs, called the Adequate Intake, run from 20 to 35 mcg a day by age and sex.
Most people get chromium from ordinary food, such as whole grains, meat and broccoli. A dropper adds very little to that.
| Reference | Amount a day | Share from 0.7 mcg |
|---|---|---|
| Daily Value (label) | 35 mcg | 2% |
| Adequate Intake, men 19-50 | 35 mcg | 2% |
| Adequate Intake, women 19-50 | 25 mcg | About 3% |
| Low end of glucose trials | 200 mcg | About 0.35% |
| High end of glucose trials | 1,000 mcg | 0.07% |
Evidence03
Does chromium picolinate for blood sugar actually work?
Chromium picolinate for blood sugar shows mixed results. A 2019 review found slight drops in fasting glucose and A1C in people with diabetes, of unclear clinical value (NIH ODS, Chromium).
In people without diabetes, chromium does not appear to change glucose at all. Those trials used 200 to 1,000 mcg a day, mostly as chromium picolinate.
NCCIH puts chromium among the few supplements with weak evidence, not strong evidence (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements). The ADA finds no supplement proven to lower glucose when there is no deficiency (ADA, Vitamins & Supplements).
Dose math04
How does 0.7 mcg compare with the doses in studies?
It is about 0.35% of the lowest studied dose. To reach 200 mcg you would need about 286 mL of the drops in one day.
That is nearly five 60 mL bottles at once, which nobody should try. The label says 1 mL a day, and the blend would multiply too.
The bars show chromium first, then four blend herbs. The red bar is what a dropper holds; the gold bar is the studied amount.
Insulin05
Does chromium improve insulin sensitivity?
Not in a way trials have clearly shown. Chromium seems to help insulin work, but studies of chromium for insulin sensitivity have mostly tracked glucose and A1C, with mixed results (NIH ODS, Chromium).
A deficiency is rare, and topping up a normal intake has not shown a clear gain. A 0.7 mcg dose is far too small to test the idea.
Weight loss and regular activity have much stronger evidence. Read insulin resistance basics for what helps.

What are the side effects of chromium picolinate?
The main chromium picolinate side effects are drug interactions: it may add to insulin and other diabetes drugs, and it may reduce levothyroxine absorption (NIH ODS, Chromium).
At 0.7 mcg, those risks are small from the chromium alone. But the drops also hold gymnema and ginseng, which may add to the same medicines.
A low usually means a reading under 70 mg/dL, with shakiness, hunger or confusion (NIDDK, Low Blood Glucose).
Never cut a dose of insulin, metformin or thyroid medicine because you started a supplement. Tell your doctor or pharmacist what you take.
Sales claim07
What does the sales page claim about chromium?
The sales page says chromium "Reduces Obesity & Lowers Blood Pressure". The evidence we found supports neither claim at this dose.
The NIH fact sheet discusses glucose trials at 200 mcg and more, not 0.7 mcg (NIH ODS, Chromium). Weight and blood pressure are not what those studies measured.
What two bottles add up to
Two bottles give 120 servings. At 0.7 mcg each, that is 84 mcg of chromium spread over 120 days.
One day in a low-dose trial used 200 mcg. Prices are on Sugar Defender pricing.

More ingredients08
Where do the other Sugar Defender ingredients stand?
The other 22 lines are blend ingredients with no printed amounts, and each has its own profile.
Gymnema is next in research weight. All 23 lines are compared on the Sugar Defender ingredients list.
FAQ09
Chromium questions, answered
How much chromium does an adult need a day?
The Adequate Intake is 20 to 35 mcg a day, depending on age and sex: 35 mcg for men 19-50 and 25 mcg for women 19-50 (NIH ODS, Chromium). The Daily Value used on labels is 35 mcg. Most people meet this from food.
What does 2% DV mean for chromium on the Sugar Defender label?
It means one 1 mL serving gives 2% of the 35 mcg Daily Value, which is 0.7 mcg. That is a very small share. It does not mean the drops meet any chromium need on their own.
How many droppers would equal a 200 mcg chromium dose?
About 286 one-milliliter droppers, close to five full bottles in one day. Do not try it: the label says 1 mL a day, and the blend herbs would rise too. If you want chromium at study doses, ask your doctor first.
Can chromium picolinate cause low blood sugar?
On its own, rarely. With insulin or other diabetes drugs it may add to their effect and raise the chance of a low (NIH ODS, Chromium). Know the signs, such as shakiness and confusion, and treat with 15-20 grams of fast carbs (NIDDK, Low Blood Glucose).
Is chromium picolinate better than other forms of chromium?
It is the best-studied form, since most glucose trials used it (NIH ODS, Chromium). That does not prove it works better than other forms. For any form, the dose matters most, and 0.7 mcg is far under what trials tested.
Does chromium change blood sugar in healthy people?
It does not appear to. The NIH fact sheet says chromium does not seem to change glucose in people without diabetes (NIH ODS, Chromium). The small effects seen were in people who already had diabetes, at 200 mcg a day or more.
