Blood sugar numbers
Normal Blood Sugar Levels: A1C, Fasting and Prediabetes Ranges
Normal blood sugar levels, by NIDDK ranges, are an A1C below 5.7% and a fasting glucose below 100 mg/dL. Prediabetes is 5.7-6.4% or 100-125 mg/dL. Diabetes is 6.5% or higher, or 126 mg/dL or higher, confirmed by a repeat test. No study shows that Sugar Defender moves any of these numbers.

The basics01
What are normal blood sugar levels?
Normal blood sugar levels for adults without diabetes are an A1C under 5.7% and a fasting plasma glucose under 100 mg/dL, using the cutoffs NIDDK publishes (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).
Blood sugar, or glucose, is the sugar your blood carries to cells for fuel. It rises after a meal and falls as insulin moves it into cells. A single reading is a snapshot of that moving number.
Labs use a few standard tests to judge the pattern. Each test has its own scale, so a "normal" fasting number and a "normal" A1C look nothing alike.
About 115.2 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, and many have never been told (CDC, National Diabetes Statistics Report). Knowing your numbers is the cheapest health check there is.
A1C levels chart02
What does an A1C levels chart show?
An A1C levels chart sorts results into three bands: normal, prediabetes and diabetes. The same three bands exist for fasting glucose and the 2-hour glucose tolerance test.
A1C is the share of hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells, that has glucose stuck to it. Red cells live for a few months, so A1C reflects a rough average over that time, not one morning.
Fasting glucose is a single blood draw after a night without food. The 2-hour test, called an OGTT, measures glucose two hours after a set sugary drink.
| Range | A1C | Fasting glucose | 2-hour OGTT |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Below 5.7% | Below 100 mg/dL | Below 140 mg/dL |
| Prediabetes | 5.7% to 6.4% | 100 to 125 mg/dL | 140 to 199 mg/dL |
| Diabetes | 6.5% or higher | 126 mg/dL or higher | 200 mg/dL or higher |
Source: NIDDK (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests). These are screening cutoffs for diagnosis. People already treated for diabetes often have personal targets set with their care team.
Reading finder03
Where does your A1C or fasting number fall?
Type a recent A1C or fasting glucose result into the finder to see which NIDDK band it lands in. It runs in your browser and stores nothing.
Use a lab result if you have one. A home finger-stick meter is useful for tracking, but it is not the test a doctor uses to diagnose.
A number in the prediabetes or diabetes band is a reason to book a visit, not a reason to panic. Diagnosis takes a confirming test.

- PrediabetesA1C 5.7-6.4%Fasting 100-125 mg/dL

Type an A1C or a fasting number to see its range. A single test is not a diagnosis; a doctor confirms with a repeat test.
Ranges from NIDDK (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests). About 115.2 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, many without knowing it (CDC, National Diabetes Statistics Report). A home meter does not give a diagnosis.
Fasting blood sugar04
What is a fasting blood sugar test?
A fasting blood sugar test measures glucose after you have gone without food or caloric drinks, usually for at least 8 hours. Under 100 mg/dL is normal (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).
Most people take it first thing in the morning. Water is usually fine. Your clinic will give you its own rules, and those win over any general advice.
A few things can nudge a single fasting reading:
- A late, heavy meal or a snack after the cutoff time
- Illness, poor sleep or high stress the night before
- Some prescription medicines, such as steroids
- Natural day-to-day variation, which is why doctors repeat tests
Bring a list of every supplement you take to the draw. Some labels, including Sugar Defender's, contain ingredients your clinician may want to know about.
After meals05
What is a normal blood sugar after eating?
For blood sugar after eating, the standard reference is the 2-hour glucose tolerance test: under 140 mg/dL two hours after the test drink is normal (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).
A real meal is not the same as the test drink. Portion size, fiber, fat and protein all change how fast glucose rises, so home readings after dinner vary widely.
If you already have diabetes, your care team sets your after-meal targets. Those depend on your age, your medicines and your risk of lows.
The CDC lists frequent urination, strong thirst and hunger, unplanned weight loss, tiredness, blurry vision and frequent infections as common signs of high blood sugar (CDC, Symptoms of Diabetes). Tell a clinician if you notice them.

What is the prediabetes range?
The prediabetes range is an A1C of 5.7% to 6.4%, a fasting glucose of 100 to 125 mg/dL, or a 2-hour reading of 140 to 199 mg/dL (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).
Prediabetes usually has no symptoms. It is also the stage where lifestyle change has the strongest evidence.
A1C and Sugar Defender07
Can Sugar Defender change your A1C?
No study shows that Sugar Defender changes A1C, because no trial of the drops has been published. The ingredient research does not point to an A1C effect at these doses either.
Pooled ginseng trials found no meaningful A1C change, even at doses up to 20 g a day (Shishtar et al., PLoS One 2014). A chromium review saw slight A1C drops of unclear clinical value, at 200 to 1,000 mcg a day (NIH ODS, Chromium). One 1 mL serving lists 0.7 mcg.
What the label order allows
Gymnema is eighth in the 200 mg blend, so one serving holds at most 25 mg. Studies used 200 to 400 mg of extract a day and found a small fasting-glucose drop (Drugs.com, Gymnema monograph). Ginseng, twelfth, holds at most 17 mg.
FDA's public reaction database has a 2024 report naming Sugar Defender that lists raised blood glucose and A1C. A report does not prove the product caused anything (openFDA, CAERS reports naming Sugar Defender). It does show why lab checks matter more than hope.
Read the full ceilings on the gymnema page and the ginseng page.

Do not stop or cut a diabetes medicine because you started a supplement, even if a reading looks better. Changes to treatment belong with your prescriber.
Next steps08
What should you do with an out-of-range blood sugar number?
Book a visit and ask for a repeat or confirming test. One high number starts a conversation; it does not settle a diagnosis.
Bring the result, your medicine list and your supplement list. Then ask what the next test is and when.
Confirm the result
NIDDK says a diabetes diagnosis needs confirmation, usually a second test (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).
Ask about a lifestyle program
Programs built on the Diabetes Prevention Program cut type 2 risk by 58% in adults with prediabetes (NIDDK, Diabetes Prevention Program).
Learn the link to insulin
Prediabetes often grows out of insulin resistance. The insulin resistance guide explains how.
Check medicines before supplements
If you take a diabetes drug, read the medicines guide before adding anything.
FAQ09
Blood sugar number questions
What is a normal A1C level?
A normal A1C is below 5.7%, according to NIDDK. From 5.7% to 6.4% is the prediabetes range, and 6.5% or higher is in the diabetes range once a repeat test confirms it (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests). A1C reflects a rough average of the past few months, not one day.
What is a normal fasting blood sugar level?
Under 100 mg/dL after a night without food is normal. From 100 to 125 mg/dL is the prediabetes range, and 126 mg/dL or higher is in the diabetes range, which needs a second test to confirm (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests). A clinic lab draw is more reliable than a home meter.
Is an A1C of 6.0 prediabetes?
Yes. An A1C of 6.0% falls inside the prediabetes range of 5.7% to 6.4% (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests). It is a common finding, shared by millions of U.S. adults (CDC, National Diabetes Statistics Report), and it is the stage where weight loss and regular activity have the strongest evidence for lowering type 2 risk (NIDDK, Diabetes Prevention Program).
Can Sugar Defender lower my A1C?
No trial has tested that, so there is no evidence it can. Ginseng studies showed no A1C change (Shishtar et al., PLoS One 2014), and chromium studies used roughly 290 to 1,430 times the 0.7 mcg in one serving (NIH ODS, Chromium). Track A1C with your doctor and judge any change by lab results.
Is a home glucose meter reading a diagnosis?
No. A finger-stick meter helps people track daily patterns, but diagnosis uses lab tests such as A1C, fasting plasma glucose or a 2-hour glucose tolerance test, confirmed by a repeat test (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests). Take a surprising home number to a clinician instead of acting on it alone.
Do you need to fast for an A1C test?
Usually not. A1C reflects glucose over the past few months, so a recent meal has little effect on it. Fasting glucose tests do need a fast, often at least 8 hours. Your lab or clinic will tell you which test you are having and how to prepare.
Does prediabetes always turn into type 2 diabetes?
No. In the Diabetes Prevention Program, lifestyle change cut the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58% in adults with prediabetes, and by 71% in those aged 60 or older (NIDDK, Diabetes Prevention Program). Losing 5-7% of body weight is the CDC's target (CDC, Prediabetes).
